Aung San Suu Kyi’s future in Myanmar
15 August 2009 The discussion between Senior General Than Shwe and Senator Webb is inknown. The discussion between Aung San Suu Kyi and Senator Webb is unknown. What message Webb convoyed to Aung San Suu Kyi is unknown. 2008 Constitution is already approved. The promised 2010 Elections are nearer. The reconciliation process which NLD is wishing for is over. The demand for reviewing the already approved constituion is clearly too late. Aung San Suu Kyi may now realise that her own political status in Myanmar depends totally on the results of 2010 Elections. If she wants to remain as an important influential political figure, she needs her party NLD contest the Elections and she needs her party NLD stays in the political show. However she has already said so many things prematurely such as during the trial she had conveyed an important message to the UNSG Ban Ki-Moon through her lawyers that the UN body should make a kind of statement that says the outcome results of 2010 Elections will not be internationally recognised as long as “talk” between the SPDC and Opposition side will not be realised. She is trapped with her own words. It is very intesesting to see how she will convince her party NLD and her followers to drop the 3 important demands below: 1. Release of all political prisoners unconditionally 2. Amendment of undemocratic parts in the 2008 constitution 3. Tripartite talk (SPDC, Aung San Suu Kyi and Ethnic) These demands NLD said must be fullfilled by the SPDC, otherwise NLD will not consider contesting the Elections. It is very likely that the first demand will be at least partially fullfilled, the SPDC will surely release some political prisoners before the Elections. She needs to realise at least the first demand in order to convince her party NLD and her followers to accept the SPDC’s 7 steps road map. She still have some bargaining chips to relaise it. If She can gurantee the following points: 1. She will drop her confrontation way of doing politics 2. She will urge the international community to lift the sanctions 3. She will help the SPDC in the realistaion of very peacful 2010 Elections It is 100% sure that the SPDC will release all political prisoners unconditionally. After all dropping the confronation way of doing politics must be an easy task to realise. We have 2008 constitution which explains the exact structure of the future government of the state of Myanmar. Everybody is expected to respect this 2008 constitution. If people think that some improvements need to be done in the constitution for the betterment of theNation, it should be prceeded through the Hluttaw (Parliament). The economy of Maynmar is very bad, everybody knows it. Myanmar’s failed econmy may be due to the SPDC’s mismangament, but claiming that the econmic sanctions are not effecting the people is very much irresponsible. It is fair to say that the SPDC’s mismanagment as well as the economic santcions are equally responsible of our Nation’s failed economy. It wond’t be a good thing if she can urge the international community to lift the sanctions in the interest of the Nation? Myanmar has experienced political conflicts for the past 20 years and it still continues. Myanmar needs “peace” desperately. Myanmar needs to have peceful and successful 2010 Elections. In the interest of the Nation, she should help the SPDC in the realistaion of very peaceful 2010 Elections and we all need to help SPDC in this matter. Hopefully, in the interest of the Nation as well as in the interest of the party survival, NLD will be able to make “wise decisions”. For Aung San Suu Kyi, the need to make “wise decisions” is very important, because it is not only for the Nation as she will surely like to claim, but also for her political status in Myanmar, for her survival as a political leader in Myanmar and most of all to save her image of “democrcay icon”. Webb will leave Myanmar with convicted American swimmer
15 August 2009 US’s Senator Jim Webb who is known for his strong criticism of the US administration’s sanctions policy paid a landmark 3 days visit to Myanmar this week. Not only he could meet with the SPDC’s Senior General Than Shwe but also he was allowed to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi within the very short mini 3 days visit. Besides, he secured the release of the American swimmer John Yettaw. In an official statement released by Webb’s office, I am grateful to the Myanmar government," Webb was quoted as saying in the statement. "It is my hope that we can take advantage of these gestures as a way to begin laying a foundation of goodwill and confidence-building in the future," Webb said These good gestures clearly indicated Myanmar’s SPDC desire to improve the relationship with the United States. After all, keeping Yettaw, a diabetic and was reportedly hospitalised earlier this month after suffering a series of fits would be a problem in the long term for SPDC. Therefore releasing him might be a wise move to be seen as “good gestures” for making an important step in the normalisation of relationship with the US. Even though Webb visit was not representing the US, he received extraordinary treat from the part of the SPDC by allowing him to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi just 4 days after the convicted verdict and not to mention a meeting with Senior General Than Shwe unlike UN’s special envoys. EU policy on Myanmar The world powers condemned over Aung San Suu Kyi sentence. However EU rushed into broadening the Sanctions against Myanmar as UN Security Council failed to adopt a text condemning Aung San Suu Kyi’s extended detention while the US prudently avoided to call for further sanctions. Brussels imposed a visa ban and asset freeze on members of the judiciary and in what it called "targeted measures" the 27 EU nations widened the bloc's existing assets freeze to cover businesses "owned and controlled by members of the regime" and their associates. If it is still too early to say the US Senator Webb’s achievenment is a “success” of engagement strategy, he at least could reach to approach the SPDC’s Senior General than Shwe and meet with Aung San Suu Kyi which the EU envoye never reached to succeed. Hopefully the US Senator’s acheivement may signal to the EU to review it’s approach to Myanmar. Sandar
